Pollution of Tengger Desert

The Tengger Desert reappears pollution with a total area of 120000 square meters. The pollutant is the waste produced in the early stage of pulp production line of Ningxia Meili Paper Industry Group Co., Ltd. At present, about 42000 tons of pollutants have been cleared up in Zhongwei city. The ecological environment bureau of Zhongwei city has filed a case against Ningxia Meili Paper Group environmental protection and energy saving Co., Ltd. for suspected environmental violations.
Recently, the news of “reappearance of large area pollutants on the edge of Tengger Desert” in Zhongwei City, Ningxia, attracted the attention of the Ministry of ecological environment. On November 9, a working group was sent to the scene of the incident to investigate and verify the problem, and the investigation results will be released to the society in time.
According to an on-the-spot investigation conducted by a reporter from Beijing News on October 16, it was found that the pollutant was the waste produced in the early stage of the pulp production line of Ningxia Meili Paper Group Co., Ltd. On October 18, the reporter of Beijing News reported the situation to the central health municipal committee. The central health municipal committee and the municipal government immediately arranged the municipal ecological environment bureau, the Municipal Natural Resources Bureau, the Municipal Water Conservancy Bureau and other units to investigate and verify the problems, and ordered the relevant departments and enterprises to rectify immediately.
At present, pollutants are being removed at the site. Up to the time of press release, about 42000 tons of pollutants have been excavated in Zhongwei City, which have been packed and sealed, and corresponding disposal measures will be taken after the results of attribute identification are clear. Zhongwei Municipal Bureau of ecological environment filed a case against Ningxia Meili Paper Group environmental protection and energy saving Co., Ltd. for suspected environmental violations.
The pollutant is the black liquor of papermaking more than ten years ago
In the “xifengkou” of Zhongwei City, which is closest to Tengger Desert and has the largest sandstorm, there is a Meili forest area covering an area of 200000 mu. The polluted site is hidden in the forest area, about 600 meters away from the boundary of Shapotou nature reserve.
On October 16, the reporter saw in front of a “dump pit”, which is more than 430 meters long and 120 meters wide, covering an area of more than 50000 square meters and more than 80 mu. Black sludge emerges intermittently from the sand, forming “patterns” of different sizes, without any anti-seepage measures, with a pungent smell.
According to the investigation of the reporter, there are 14 pollution points in total, the largest area is more than 80 mu.
Because it has just rained and some places have accumulated water, people may even think that the landform here is originally shuize lake.
From 2003 to 2011, Li Genshan, a volunteer of Yebao who had done security inspection work in Ningxia Meili Paper Group Co., Ltd., said, “more than ten years ago, we found that five or six yellow sheep were trapped in the polluted mud and could not die. Later, the paper workers took them out and disposed of them.”
The solid pollutants dug from a pollution point are thick and piled up, and soon flow to the surrounding area, with a pungent smell.
Li Genshan uses a piece of tree trunk to insert into the sludge dug by the spade, which is more than 1 meter deep at a time, bringing out all the sticky and stinking black solids like asphalt, scraping away the sludge, and the spade is covered with a layer of oil film. “The shell on the surface used to be very hard, so it can’t be dug with a spade. It rained two days ago, but it was softer, so it can be dug. For more than ten years, every time it rained, it seeped down, so the groundwater must have been polluted.” Li Genshan said.
The area covered by solid pollutants is barren.
The reporter walked on the surface of dry sludge, shaking under his feet, like stepping on an old tofu.
Several former employees of Ningxia Meili Paper Group Co., Ltd. recalled that the location of these dump pits was originally sand dunes in the Tengger Desert. In the process of afforestation, the former Meili Paper industry used 300 heavy excavators, leveled 20000 sand dunes, fixed sand with wheat straw squares into a field, and then planted trees in the field to form a continuous forest area with green trees. The pit was dug when the enterprise built the road. It was dug four or five meters deep from the sand dune, and the gravel inside was taken out to pave the road on the sand.
People familiar with the matter told reporters that the pit dug for road construction later became a ready-made dumping point for waste liquid. More than ten years ago, an old worker saw the black liquor produced by the paper pulp production of Meili Paper Industry dumped into the pit by truck. “There were a lot of pits like this at that time. Now you can see those places where there are no trees. They are basically under the sand.”.
Looking down from the air with drones, the big ones are dozens of Mu and the small ones are half the size of a basketball court. Because it is covered by yellow sand, it seems to be distributed intermittently.
The reporter learned that the 200000 Mu forest area is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Chengtong Holding Group Co., Ltd. The forest area environmental protection work is entrusted to MCC meiliyun (6.400, – 0.71, – 9.99%) Industrial Investment Co., Ltd.
On November 10, the information provided by the Publicity Department of Zhongwei municipal Party Committee showed that the black slimy substance found in Meili forest area was the black liquor produced in the pulping production of Ningxia Meili Paper Industry Group Co., Ltd. from 1998 to 2004. At that time, Ningxia Meili Paper Group Co., Ltd. did not have a black liquor recovery system. The black liquor produced in papermaking was entrusted to Ningxia Meili Paper Group environmental protection and energy saving Co., Ltd. for treatment. From 1998 to 2002, Ningxia Meili Paper Group environmental protection and energy saving Co., Ltd. dumped part of the black liquor to the Merrill Lynch area. From 2002 to 2004, Ningxia Meili Paper Group Co., Ltd. successively built two sets of black liquor recovery systems. During this period, due to the unstable operation of the black liquor recovery system, part of the black liquor was also dumped into the Meili forest area. After 2004, the black liquor recovery system was used for disposal. In February 2015, the former pulp production line of Ningxia Meili Paper Group Co., Ltd
