The Coca-Cola Company released a message on October 3rd that they were the first sample bottles made from recycled and recycled marine plastics, indicating that one day even marine waste can be used for food or beverage recycling. The sample was the first ever plastic bottle made from marine waste that has been successfully recycled and reused in food and beverage packaging. Approximately 300 vials were produced using 25% recycled marine plastic recovered from the Mediterranean and beaches.
In the short term, the recycling of existing recyclers will be utilized, including previously non-recyclable plastics and inferior recyclable materials, to introduce enhanced recycling on a commercial scale. Beginning in 2020, Coca-Cola plans to promote this enhanced recyclable ingredient in some of its bottles.
